SAA warns that all unaccompanied minors, when travelling on international services, must be in possession of the required valid travel documentation and comply with all other stipulated requirements for the country of destination.


Domestic niche route operator, CemAir is expanding its network and has grown its fleet with a new 50-seater Bombardier Dash-8 Q300 to boost capacity on its popular Margate and Plettenberg Bay service.

Air Namibia

Air Namibia confirms the cancellation of selected domestic, regional and international flights during the festive season from 20 December 2016 to 8 January 2017 due to low demand.

Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific will increase its checked baggage allowance for all passengers worldwide, effective for tickets issued or exchanged after 15 September 2016.  Passengers in each class will be allowed an additional 10kg of checked baggage.

Swiss Air

Swiss Air has expanded its inflight meal offerings to economy-class passengers on long-haul flights from Switzerland. Travellers will be able to pre-order an à la carte meal for lunch or dinner for a fee. There are six new meal choices and the prices range from CHF29 (R428) to CHF49 (R723). Passengers can also choose to have a half bottle of Californian Chardonnay or Italian Sangiovese accompany their meals. This new meal service will apply to any Swiss Air flight departing on or after 7 September 2016. All meals need to be ordered 24 hours before departure on the Swiss Air website. This service will not be available on flights to Cairo, Tel Aviv or Shanghai.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways will expand its service to Italy with a daily flight to Venice from Abu Dhabi. This new service will be operated by Etihad using an Airbus A319 and will begin on 30 October 2016.

British Airways

British Airways has reduced its inflight catering from two meals to one on certain long-haul flights of less than eight hours.

Delta Airlines
Delta Airlines is moving terminals at London Heathrow from 14 September 2016.  Currently, Delta services to Atlanta, Detroit, Menneapolis, Salt Lake City and Philadelphia operate from Terminal 4.  These flights will move to Terminal 3 to join Delta’s New York-JFK, Boston and Seattle services.

Iranian Airline

Iranian Airline has applied for a Schedule Foreign Operators Permit for a twice-weekly service between Tehran and Johannesburg.

Precision Air

Precision Air has announced the resumption of flights between Hahaya in the Comoros and Dar es Salaam on 16 August 2016, but has since postponed these plans.


ACSA has increased its free WI-Fi offering to travellers at all local airports to 1GB or four hours. To access the free WI-FI travellers should connect to airport@vast.

Federal Health

Officials have expanded the Zika travel warnings for the US.  Pregnant woman are warned not to travel to Miami Beach after Florida confirmed that the mosquito-borne Zika virus was active in the popular tourist destination.

Passports and IDs

South Africans can now apply for their passports and Smart IDs online and collect the documents at their nearest bank.  The system is open to all citizens who bank with ABSA, FNB, Nedbank and Standard Bank.

Closure of Argentina Mendoza’s El Plumerillo airport

Following the closure of Argentina Mendoza’s El Plumerillo airport between 07 September and 07 December 2016, the National Ministry of Transport will organise a free shuttle service to other airports and airlines providing transportation to and from Mendoza.  The service will be available between the airports of San Rafael, San Luis & San Juan to the omnibus Terminal of Mendoza. The other airports are only a couple of hours from the city.
